Play the red line

This is the opening of Ode to Joy, the way the app teaches it. Play each note as it reaches the red felt. The left hand and a bar of clicks play along with you.

Tap the keys, press A S D F G on your keyboard, or plug in a MIDI piano. Each note is graded by the same scorer the app uses.

Questions

Do I need a real piano?
No. The on-screen keyboard works on its own. Plug in a digital piano or MIDI keyboard over USB or Bluetooth and every note is graded. On an acoustic piano, the microphone can listen to one note at a time.
Which tablets does it run on?
iPad and Android tablets, held in landscape. It’s laid out for 10 and 13 inch screens, so there’s room for the music and the keys.
Is it really free?
Yes. Every lesson, song and warm-up is in the app, with nothing locked and no ads. If you’d like to help, sponsoring on GitHub pays for the time it takes.
How does the scoring work?
Each note has a target time. Within 50 ms is perfect, within 120 ms is good, and later or the wrong key is a miss. Chords count when every note lands. Timing comes from the piano’s own timestamps, and a tap-along test takes off your device’s delay.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Five starter songs come inside the app, and songs you download stay on the tablet. Your progress is stored there too. There is no account.
Where should a beginner start?
Piano from zero: 19 short steps from finding middle C to the Minuet in G. Two stars open the next step, and a daily warm-up keeps your streak going.
